Support for persons with disabilities through occupational rehabilitation

Studies show that persons off work for extended periods due to illness or injury never return to work, kickstarting a cycle of personal and financial instability. The National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR), together with the BC provincial government, are introducing an initiative in Vancouver, Kelowna, Nanaimo, and Prince George with the goal of reducing poverty among British Columbians off work due to physical and mental health impairments.

Under the Reducing Poverty Initiative, qualified case managers holding the gold standard designation of Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) intervene early to help persons with disabilities transition into meaningful employment.

More than 80% of mental and physical health impairments emerge during a person’s work life. After becoming disabled, fewer than 1% will ever work again if they are not re-employed within the first year of their illness or injury. Evidence shows that restoring the ability to work is instrumental in securing financial stability, as well as personal and social well-being. Persons with disabilities, who are able to work with effective support, represent a highly valuable pool of labour able to help tackle ongoing labour shortages. In short, disability assistance has a role to play in reducing poverty in the province of British Columbia.

People out of work due to injury, illness, or disability will have opportunities to access specialized services and support while they’re seeking to return to their jobs. A Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) will intervene to assemble early, safe, appropriate support for each person’s case. Providing sound case management, the CDMP’s interventions could include arranging for medical exams, ergonomic assistance, accommodation plans, healthcare support, and job coaching.

Those who have been out of work for approximately four to six weeks due to illness, injury, or disability—and are not covered by short-term or long-term disability insurance—are eligible to apply. The online application asks up to (how many?) questions. It is helpful to gather necessary paperwork in advance, including (list here). Program Administration

NIDMAR is committed to reducing the human, social, and economic cost of disability to workers, employers, and society through education, research, policy development, and promotion of workplace-based reintegration programs.

Completing education through either NIDMAR or Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCU-WHS) is the gateway to obtaining the professional designation of CDMP—the internationally accepted Gold Standard for those working in the fields of Disability Management and Return to Work. Key responsibilities for CDMPs include developing effective occupational rehabilitation programs in cooperation with employers, unions, human resources, and occupational health and safety departments, as well as with physiotherapists, ergonomists, pain clinics, and wellness practitioners.
